A little history

Mountain huts give hikers and climbers a bed and a meal high in the Alps; many belong to the Swiss Alpine Club, founded in 1863.

Rack railways climb slopes too steep for ordinary trains, with a toothed rack between the rails. The first mountain rack railway in Europe opened on the Rigi in 1871.

The booklet opens with the full story: key dates, what to look for and where to find it.
