A little history

Its replacement, Jakob Friedrich Wanner's sandstone palace with a triumphal arch facing Bahnhofstrasse, opened in 1871; the bronze monument to railway pioneer Alfred Escher was unveiled in front of it in 1889.

Today the old hall is a vast public concourse in one of Europe's busiest stations, and the river Sihl still flows beneath the platforms.

The booklet opens with the full story: key dates, what to look for and where to find it.

Visiting the Zürich Hauptbahnhof

Address
Bahnhofplatz, 8001 Zürich
Getting there
Trains arrive here from all over Switzerland, and many trams stop on Bahnhofplatz or Bahnhofquai right outside.
Insider tip
Step back onto Bahnhofplatz, by the Escher fountain, for the best view of the arch. Then walk through the main hall, where you will often find a market or event; check what is on before you go.
