A little history

The covered wooden Chapel Bridge followed in the 14th century, crossing the river diagonally to link the two halves of the town. In the 17th century its roof gables were painted with scenes of Swiss and Lucerne history.

A fire in August 1993 destroyed much of the bridge and most of the paintings; it was rebuilt and reopened in April 1994.

The booklet opens with the full story: key dates, what to look for and where to find it.

Getting there
About five minutes on foot from Lucerne station: walk towards the old town along the river.
Insider tip
For the classic photo, stand on the Seebrücke or the quay near the station in the early morning, when the bridge is quiet. Then cross it slowly and look up at the paintings.
